Long before matcha found its way into cafés around the world, it began as a simple green tea prepared for quiet moments of focus and reflection.
From China to Japan
The earliest forms of powdered tea can be traced to China's Song Dynasty (960–1279), when steamed tea leaves were compressed, dried, ground into powder, and whisked with hot water.
Centuries later, Buddhist monks carried this method to Japan, where it continued to evolve. Japanese growers refined the cultivation and preparation techniques, eventually developing the matcha tradition that many people recognize today.
While matcha is closely associated with Japan, its earliest roots began in China before becoming part of Japanese tea culture.
Matcha comes from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, but it is grown and prepared differently from ordinary steeped green tea.
Before harvest, the plants are shaded from direct sunlight. The tender leaves are then harvested, steamed, dried, and carefully refined. Stems and coarse veins are removed before the remaining leaf material is slowly milled into an exceptionally fine powder.
Because matcha is whisked directly into water rather than steeped and removed, the powdered leaf remains in the cup. This gives matcha its full texture, vivid green appearance, and concentrated tea character.
A well-made matcha may taste fresh, gently vegetal, softly savory, and naturally smooth. Its final character depends on the growing conditions, harvest, processing, freshness, and preparation.
One leaf, transformed through patience and craft.
Preparing matcha does not need to be complicated.
Sift the powder into a bowl, add warm water, and whisk until the surface is smooth with a fine layer of foam. Enjoy it as it is, or add water, ice, or your preferred milk.

At ORTEANA, matcha belongs to Rise—our ritual for clear beginnings. That may be the quiet moment before the house wakes, a pause before work, or an early-afternoon return to focus.
The ritual takes only a few minutes. Its value is not in making the morning more elaborate, but in giving one small part of the day your full attention.
Choose your moment. Meet your plant. Make it a ritual.
Bring the ritual into your day.
Our ceremonial Matcha is shade-grown, first-harvest, and stone-ground for a smooth, vibrant cup. Prepared slowly or simply, it is made for clear beginnings and intentional pauses.
